Al Boraq: How Morocco's High-Speed Train Changed Travel in the North

When Al Boraq entered service in November 2018, it became the first high-speed railway in Africa. For travelers, the practical effect is simple: the north of Morocco is now close to the Atlantic cities.

Where it runs

Trains run between Tanger Ville, Kenitra, Rabat Agdal and Casablanca. The dedicated high-speed section between Tangier and Kenitra allows speeds of up to 320 km/h; south of Kenitra, trains use upgraded conventional tracks.

What it changes for itineraries

• Arriving by ferry: cross from Tarifa to Tangier in the morning and be in Rabat or Casablanca by the afternoon.
• Open-jaw trips: fly into Tangier, visit Chefchaouen, then take the train south to Rabat and Casablanca before continuing to Marrakech.
• Day trips: Rabat becomes an easy day out from Casablanca, and vice versa.

Tickets

Tickets can be bought on the ONCF website and app or at stations. Trains can be busy on weekends and around holidays, so book ahead for those dates.
