Getting Around Morocco

The main international airports for travelers are Marrakech Menara (RAK), Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN), Agadir Al Massira (AGA), Fès–Saïss (FEZ), Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG) and Rabat–Salé (RBA). Smaller airports such as Essaouira, Ouarzazate and Dakhla have more limited routes.

Flying into one city and out of another, for example into Tangier and out of Marrakech, avoids backtracking.

ONCF operates Morocco's railways. The Al Boraq high-speed line, in service since 2018, runs between Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca, with Tangier to Casablanca taking around two hours ten minutes.

Conventional trains connect Casablanca with Marrakech (roughly two hours forty to three hours twenty), and link Rabat and Casablanca with Meknes and Fes. The Casablanca airport has its own rail link to the city.

CTM and Supratours run comfortable intercity coaches with luggage handling and assigned seats. They reach destinations the railway does not, such as Essaouira, Agadir, Chefchaouen and Ouarzazate.

A car gives flexibility for the Atlas, the south and coastal road trips. Traffic drives on the right. Driving in medinas and dense city centers is stressful and parking is limited, so pick up the car when leaving a city.

Check insurance cover and excess, whether your licence requires an International Driving Permit, and whether cross-border travel or unpaved roads are excluded.

Scooter and motorcycle rentals exist in some coastal and surf areas. Wear a helmet, confirm insurance and only ride if you are experienced with local traffic conditions.

A pre-booked transfer is the least stressful arrival, particularly at night or when staying inside a medina where the driver must hand you over to a porter or host. Airports also have taxi ranks and, in some cities, bus or rail links.

A private driver is a popular way to cover routes with many stops, such as Marrakech to the Sahara or Fes to Chefchaouen. Agree the itinerary, hours and what is included in writing.

Premium options such as chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles, private aviation and yacht charters exist in major hubs, but availability varies. We will only recommend specific providers once we can verify them.

Fast ferries from Tarifa arrive at Tanger Ville port in the center of Tangier in around an hour. Ferries from Algeciras arrive at Tanger Med, far outside the city. Other routes link Spain and France with Moroccan ports.

Petits taxis operate within cities, carry up to three passengers and are color-coded by city. Grands taxis are larger shared or private vehicles used between towns. Agree a fare or ask for the meter before setting off.
