Marrakech to Merzouga: How to Reach the Sahara Dunes

The tall orange dunes of Erg Chebbi, near the village of Merzouga, are the Sahara landscape most travelers imagine. Reaching them from Marrakech is a journey across the High Atlas and through the valleys of the south, and it deserves time.

The route

The most direct route runs about 560 km:

1. Marrakech to the Tizi n'Tichka pass: a winding mountain road across the High Atlas.
2. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate: the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar and the gateway to the south.
3. Dades Valley and Todgha Gorge: dramatic valleys near Tinghir and popular overnight stops.
4. Erfoud to Merzouga: the final stretch to the edge of the dunes.

Without stops, the drive takes around eight hours. With meals, fuel and photo stops, expect nine to ten.

How many days do you need?

We recommend a minimum of three days: Marrakech to the Dades or Todgha area on day one, on to Merzouga and a desert camp on day two, and a return towards Marrakech or onwards to Fes on day three. Four days or more make the journey far more relaxed.

Tour, private driver or self-drive?

Shared group tours

The most economical option, with transport, accommodation and a camel trek included. Days are long, stops follow a fixed schedule and group sizes vary. Read recent reviews carefully.

Private driver or private tour

You set the pace and choose the stops and accommodation. This is the most comfortable option for couples, families and photographers.

Self-drive

The roads are paved and the route is easy to follow, but mountain driving on the Tizi n'Tichka requires care, and you will need to arrange camp transfers into the dunes, which are usually done by 4x4 or camel from the edge of the erg.

Finishing in Fes

Rather than returning to Marrakech, many travelers continue from Merzouga north through the Middle Atlas to Fes, turning the desert trip into a route between two imperial cities. See our Fes travel guide.

When to go

October to April is the most comfortable period for the desert. Midsummer days are extremely hot, and midwinter nights can drop below freezing, so ask your camp about blankets and heating.
