New Year's Eve in Agadir: Beach Hotels and Gala Dinners

Agadir is the warm option. While Marrakech cools to single figures after dark and the desert approaches freezing, the Atlantic coast keeps afternoons around 21°C with eight to ten hours of sunshine a day.

It is also the simplest option, because here one booking usually covers the whole evening.

The hotel runs your New Year

Agadir was rebuilt as a seaside resort after the 1960 earthquake, and its economy is built around large hotels along the bay. On 31 December most of them organise their own evening: a set dinner, often a buffet, usually with live music, sometimes overlooking the ocean.

The practical consequence is that choosing your hotel is choosing your celebration. Before booking, ask the three questions that decide the night:

• Is the gala dinner included in the room rate, or added as a compulsory supplement?

• Is it a seated dinner or a buffet, and at what time?

• Is the rate refundable if plans change?

Restaurants in town also run dinner-and-show evenings with Moroccan cuisine and traditional music, which suits travellers who would rather not spend the night inside their hotel.

Who Agadir suits, and who it does not

It suits families, couples who want sun rather than a late night, travellers arriving on a package, and anyone who wants one address to handle everything.

The weather, honestly

December afternoons are around 21°C, evenings drop to roughly 9°C, and the month is mostly dry with only a handful of rainy days. The Atlantic is about 19°C: swimmable for a quick dip, not for lounging in the water.

So it is a beach destination in the sense of walks, terraces and sun, not of long swims. Bring a jacket for the evening, especially on the seafront where the wind picks up after dark.

What to do around the celebration

• Taghazout, half an hour north, is Morocco's main surf town and stays busy in winter.

• Paradise Valley, in the foothills, is an easy half-day of pools and palm groves.

• The kasbah, reachable by cable car, gives the whole bay at sunset.

• Souk El Had, one of the largest markets in the country, replaces the medina Agadir no longer has.

1 January in Agadir

1 January is a public holiday in Morocco: banks and public offices close. In a resort town, this changes little for visitors — hotels, cafés, the beach and the promenade carry on as usual — but expect a quiet morning and reduced bus schedules.

When to book

Early December is one of the cheapest weeks of the year on this coast. That changes quickly: as Christmas and New Year approach, demand rises and rates rise with it, and the seafront hotels with the best gala evenings fill first.
